Premium Prices Limit Emerging Therapies

According to Decision Resources – one of the world’s top pharmaceutical research organizations – abiraterone will soon outrun Provenge and some other major anti-cancer drugs. It is expected to be applied for the treatment of both metastatic and non-metastatic prostate cancer, not requiring docetaxel (Taxotere) based chemotherapy.

The recent European Physician & Payer Forum summoned oncologists and research persons from the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, etc., who have agreed that a drug’s efficacy will be the main criterion for defining the most appropriate treatment for prostate cancer.

Decision Resources analysts and leading investors in the biotechnology sector like Lindsay Rosenwald, MD, believe that successful marketing is only feasible if the drug’s efficacy level surpasses the current standard. The choice of a standard depends on the severity of case. Hormonal therapies are applied to asymptomatic cancer, while symptomatic cancer requires Sanofi-Aventis’s Taxotere. Therefore, most patients with symptomatic prostate cancer are supposed to pass a Taxotere treatment course in combination with other agents, such as, for example, zibotentan, Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Spryceel, Celgene’s Revlimid, etc. These agents are expected to compete for use with Taxotere.

Abiraterone acetate has been purchased by Johnson & Johnson in 2009 along with Cougar Biotechnology, one of the most promising Lindsay Rosenwald’s, portfolio company. In its turn, Cougar had acquired abiraterone acetate from a UK life sciences company, BTG.

Amgen’s Prolia is expected to receive an approval as a tool against non-metastatic prostate cancer, which often requires prolonged treatment courses. This explains the drug’s significant commercial potential.

According to the report, the use of abiraterone acetate in the treatment of non-metastatic cancer is the only emerging therapy that qualifies for a NICE approval. Although the prices of Revilmid and Provenge therapies are likely to impede their implementation, their use can be stimulated by combining them with docetaxel.

This report is based on the testimony of more than 250 oncologists from different countries of Europe.

What Lindsay’s Associate Had to Say

Fifteen years ago I answered an advertisement in the New York Times that had been placed by an specialty investment firm focused on the field of medicine.  They were in search of a CEO.  On the day of my interview I was led into an office where I met Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald.  Over the next six hours, while I spoke with Linsdsay, I was amazed to watch him at work.  He took several calls, sometimes simultaneously, and had brief segues with a nonstop parade of visitors.  He calmly conducted trades via a few monitors presenting him with market activity.  He told me, at the end of the day, that the job was mine, and that he would see me the following moring to talk further.  I excitedly phoned my brother to talk about my interview.  When I told him who it was with, he responded loudly, "You met with who?!  Do you have any idea who Lindsay Rosenwald is?!"

I cannot convey how much of an understatement it is to say that the interview permanently altered my life and career.  It was because of Lindsay Rosenwald that I had this opportunity that hardly anyone would have given me.  With a background in basic nutrition, I had no idea or knowledge of financial markets.  Linsday Rosenwald was willing to take the risk, however.  I then found myself in the world of venture capital, merchant banking, and corporate finance.  At the end, this was an incredible, dynamic, and dense learning opportunity.

These are things to think about:

Pick a direction and stay on track.

While pioneers may get the arrows, it's the settlers that get the land.

You shouldn't worry about casual gossip if it's about you.  Really, it's just idol-worship.

Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald is amazingly smart and works relentlessly.  He took a chance on me based on the potential he thought that I had, potential that others passed over.  I was certainly not qualified for the job on paper, but Lindsay Rosenwald nurtures the potential he perceives and creates a creative environment that cultivates evolution and free thought for emerging technologies.

My story is not unique.  Lindsay Rosenwald has served this role and launched countless careers for many individuals.  He never takes credit for it.  Though we all had great talent, we wouldn't have had the opportunities to grow and express that talent if it weren't for Lindsay Rosenwald and people like him.

Sh’or Yoshuv Institute & The Rosenwalds

Sh’or Yoshuv Institute is a Rabbinical College of prominence, a standard bearer in Jewish education for over forty years.  The Institute also hosts a congregation, and the premier spiritual and educational community center for the Far Rockaway and Five Towns Jewish communities, which together represent one of the largest Orthodox Jewish communities in the United States.  Servicing a community of close to one thousand families, the Institute is also known for its Jewish outreach programs, and its unique sensitivity to the needs of the global Jewish community and of those individuals who walk through its beckoning doorway. Sensitivity is a hallmark of the Sh’or Yoshuv, and the leading characteristic of those who are drawn to support the Institute’s timeless mission to transmit a Jewish education.  Such sensitivity, and global interest in charitable causes, are trademarks of Dr. and Mrs. Lindsay Rosenwald, dear friends of our institute and role models for our community.  As the leaders of a family committed to charity-- as a couple whose energy to help those in need is matched by their magnanimous heart and soul-- the Rosenwalds are philanthropists of unique discretion and integrity.

One of the many remarkable traits of the Rosenwalds can be found in their parenting.  Pursuing charitable causes in not something they do on the phone, something separate from their home life.  Their charitable pursuits are their home life; they include the children in many activities supporting charitable causes.  Events to create awareness for different children’s causes and fund raisers are held in their home, always, to allow their children to learn by example and one day follow in their parents’ footsteps. The future of humanity is a daily concern for the Rosenwald family.  Eagerly, and enthusiastically, they invest in programs for the betterment of society, particularly in the area of education.  Rarely does one find such benefactors who, in addition to the donations they give throughout the world, also have a direct relationship with specific individuals requiring financial assistance on a worldwide scale.

Stories abound about Dr. Rosenwald’s generous heart.  One of the doctor’s friends is an artist, who became the beneficiary of Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald’s extraordinary generosity.  Dr. Rosenwald bought his friend’s paintings, which now adorn the lobby of the Institute’s main building.  The paintings were and are beautiful , but they were bought with the sole purpose of financially helping the artist.  Yet another story involves the Rosenwald’s being honored at a previous Sh’or Yoshuv Annual Banquet.  The doctor agreed to accept the award, but told Sh’or Yoshuv, “I don’t like the limelight, but you know I will do what it takes to help you out.”

Perhaps the most poignant story to share involves the Institute during a critical budget crisis. A meeting was called to resolve major deficits, and took place in Dr. Rosenwald’s home.  After remaining silent during the entire meeting, Dr. Rosenwald approached the Rabbi, and privately whispered that he would cover the entire deficit.  He had been sensitive to everyone in the room, and needed no accolades for the generous offer he had in mind all along.

The Institute is proud that the magnificent atrium of the campus is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Rosenwald’s father, Mr. David R. Rosenwald,Esq. The Rosenwalds are dear personal friends of Sh’or Yoshuv Institute, and join Sh’or Yoshuv for the High Holy Days, while also participating in many other of the Institute’s religious services. They are deeply committed to their rich heritage, and are an integral part of the very foundation of support that sustains the Institute as a vibrant center of Jewish education. Their continued assistance is a source of inspiration to the entire administration, and a vital link to Sh’or Yoshuv Institute’s future success.

Heritage Program & Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald

Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald founded these companies and serves as the Chairman and CEO.  A long-time supporter of the Jewish Heritage Programs, Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald has expanded his influence from medicine and finance to include Jewish students as well.  He has held many JHP events in his offices, assisting JHP in inspiring Jewish students to connect with and relate to their heritage.  At mentoring events, such as those held by Lindsay Rosenwald, businesspeople and professionals mentor and advise students to this end.

As a result, Lindsay Rosenwald was honored in 2007 as JHP's "Mentor of the Year."  An event was held in summer of that year during which Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald accepted his award with other honorees, including Andrew Schwartz, that year's alumni honoree, and Mr. Jonathan Golub, who is a Strategist with the company Bear Stearns and valued long-term supporter of JHP.

Since it began in 1993, Jewish Heritage Programs has engaged over sixty-five thousand Jewish students at 10 colleges or Universities.  These students organize and facilitate their own events and functions, in turn forming connections of lasting value to their peers, professionals, and to the general Jewish community.  Through the activities of people such as Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald, JHP's efforts to engage many Jewish students in their heritage and connect them to their community have been greatly enhanced.
